Mbole Copper Currency/Ankle Bracelets from the Democratic Republic of the Congo - These ankle bracelets served as currency for the Mbole people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A blacksmith forged these huge circular anklets from a single copper ingot for both men and women. The Mbole are an ethnic group of the Democratic Republic of the Congo that live in the Orientale Province, southwest of Kisangani.

About the Tribe

The Mbole also known as Bambole are an ethnic group of the Democratic Republic of the Congo that live in the Orientale Province, south of the confluence of the Lomami and Lualaba rivers and south-west of Kisangani, which forms a long strip alongside both banks of the middle reaches of the Lomami river and broadens from the north-east to the south-west. The territory of the Mbole is situated in the Central Basin at the Equator; this central depression is covered by extensive and often marshy forests. They speak a Mongo-language, a member of the Benue-Congo branch of the Niger-Congo languages.
