Adouma Mvudi Mask from Adouma tribe of Gabon - The Adouma ethnic group is distinguished by the uniqueness of their polychromy, which is painted in contrasting white and ocher quarters. These wooden carved masks are characterized by elongated flat face with an open rectangular mouth and eyes, angular nose and a flattened top of the head. These masks have been used for celebratory dances associated with major social rituals.
About the Tribe
The Adouma also known as the Duma, are a small ethnic group in Gabon who are known as expert canoeists. They live in the Ogooué River region. They are part of the Niger Congo family, speaking Duma and Nzebi languages.
