Collection: Guro Tribe Collection
The Guro or Gouro people (also known as the Kweni) are Mandé-speaking people residing in the valley regions of the Bandama River in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Mande invasions in the second half of the 18th century drove the Guro from the north and northwest. Invading French colonists brutally colonized them between 1906 and 1912. The Guro were originally known as the Kweni, and their neighbors, the Baule, gave them the name "Guro or Gouro." The Guro are some of Africa's most prolific artists.
