Baule Tribe Twin Mask – This is a unique and iconic mask created by the Baule people. This mask represents a pair of identical or symmetrical faces joined together, typically with a central crested ridge running between them. Each face usually has distinct features such as prominent eyes, a narrow nose, and a small mouth. The mask is often carved from a single piece of wood, with intricate detailing and fine craftsmanship. The Twin Mask holds significant cultural and spiritual importance among the Baule people. It is associated with the belief in the existence of spiritual twins, known as "blolo bla." According to Baule cosmology, these twins are considered to be guardian spirits and intermediaries between the human world and the spirit realm.

About the Tribe

The Guro or Gouro people (also known as the Kweni) are Mandé-speaking people residing in the valley regions of the Bandama River in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast). Mande invasions in the second half of the 18th century drove the Guro from the north and northwest. Invading French colonists brutally colonized them between 1906 and 1912. The Guro were originally known as the Kweni, and their neighbors, the Baule, gave them the name "Guro or Gouro." The Guro are some of Africa's most prolific artists.
